Estocar Burning a Little Midnight Oil with Internet Radio

In the past seven years Estocar has played less than a handful of times on KEXP. A DJ even bumped our song Please Advise out of rotation in order to play the Beatles on the day of our CD Release show. We have had a nice run of getting played at KEOL 91.7 Eastern Oregon University each time we played a local show at the now defunct Gadfly in La Grande, Oregon. This June we were able to do an Instudio Performance at WMSE Milwaukee.

With upcoming release of our new album Faux Fiction and the planning of our three week Bum Rush The Narrative Tour, I began to seek out other avenues for getting our album listened to and shows promoted. Why? Well...my personal feelings is that many of the bigger college radio stations are starting to get a little to formulamatic with their airplay and Estocar definitely does not fit their formula at this or really any time. My other thought is that people are still waiting for permission to like Estocar in Seattle.

One of the early adopters of Estocar was a Philadelphia internet radio station called Gashouse Radio. We have had a pretty solid run of being played on that station for about 3 months and were on the stations top ten for about 2 of those months. Unfortunately, we have fallen off their charts and that is fine. There are many new bands touring Philadelphia taking our place on the Gashouse Radio Charts and I think that's a good thing for touring indie bands.

Below is a list of Internet Radio Stations that I will be targeting for spins during our August West Coast Tour. The following stations are 10 minutes or less away from me. Rainy Dog Radio - A University of Washington student run station is out for the summer, but will follow up with them when the University of Washington resumes classes this fall to help promote our Friday September 21st Show at Rat and Raven in the University District. Hollow Earth Radio - I have actually sent this station many emails and cant seem to get them to respond. They are an all volunteer staff so I am sure they are understaffed and busy. I am going to drop off a CD and band one sheet tomorrow afternoon at Hollow Earth Radio. Jet City Stream - They actually invite bands to come down on Friday from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM to listen to your music. I did this, but found that all radio staff were at the Capitol Hill Block Party.

The remaining stations are in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Soma Fm, Bagel Radio, Moheak, Intraffik, and Indie 1031.

Estocar Launches DIY College Radio Campaign

I have allways loved our releases, but this is the first time I honestly believe that we can get some serious college radio play. I reached out to the Tinderbox back in April to learn more about there College Radio promotion service for our upcoming album Faux Fiction. They came back with the following proposal:

300 CDs sent to 300 stations for $2100.00 this would include 8 weeks of CMJ tracking plays at each station, follow up calls to the station regarding the submission, and feedback from music directors for each station. I contacted another college radion submission service and got the following response from Tenni Gharakhanian at The Planetary Group. "Listened to the music and not sure if it's really the best fit for us or something we can excel at for you."

Many of the college radio stations that I would like to target are shut down for the summer and resume broadcasting fall quarter so a big mass mailing would be a waste of time and money at this juncture. That all being said I have wittled down a list of stations in California and Oregon that are open for business during the summer months. We have a two smaller tours in the middle of August and I will be mailing CDs this week to these stations for adding our album to their rotation. Hopefully, some persistent phone calling, emails, and a little good will for a touring band will help get us some airplay in the Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, .

I have decided to do a trial run and target the following 12 College Radio Stations: KPSU Portland State University, KWVA University of Oregon, KBVR Oregon State University, KALX UC Berkely, KSZU Stanford, KXSC University of Southern California, KUCI University California Irvine, KXLU Loyola Marymount University, KCRW Santa Monica College. KCSN California State University Northridge

What about KEXP? Shouldn't a Seattle/Portland band be targeting the Seattle radio station "where the music matters." Lets save question of whether Estocar music matter to KEXP for another blog post. I will follow up with a future blog posts detailing the results of the trial run.

The Evolution of a Guru's Revenge

We played a show at the Red Room Portland back in February 2008. Someone recorded a very early version of us playing Guru's Revenge. It's very interesting (at least to me) to hear how a song as evolved over the years. We tried to record the song for the album Giraffe Riot, but it just was not working out. The song was resurrected for the Recording of Metaphorically Speaking at Tiny Telephone in San Francisco with the bass part being played on a Moog. Yesterdays, post features the latest version that we played at our record release party at the High Dive.

Guru's Revenge Video from High Dive CD Release Show

Video from our friends The Rivertubes I am never sure if the band name is The River Tubes or The Rivertubes. Also, is there a THE in the band name? Long story short above is a video of an older Estocar Song called Guru's Revenge.

Estocar Rediscovers Myspace

So, back in early days of the Estocar we jumped on the social networking bandwagon and got a Myspace page. Was it helpful? Yes and No. We did meet some interesting people doing interesting things on their webcams. We booked a few shows with it and were able to say yes when the booker at the comet tavern would ask if you had a Myspace page. We still have our Myspace page and have synced up all our twitter, facebook, reverbnation, and bandcamp web properties with it. I am predicting that Myspace will start become more relevant for our band over next 12 months as Myspace continues too reinvent itself as a media company. I am going to start hacking arround with the Myspace blog and adding some more fresh content to see if our music and Myspace web property can get more plays and maybe a few more sales, likes, friends, and shows. I will update this posting over the next few weeks and let you know if I have seen any results.

Bought an Omnichord on eBay for the next Estocar album

It aint no Keytar. The Omnichord has unique, chiming timbre that I will be using in the same style that I used many old casio keyboards to sync up with either the snare, hi-hat, or ride cymbal. Might even use a little delay to shadow the rhythms.

Band Practice Recorded On iPhone

Watch live video from estocar on Justin.tv Trying out this service called Justin.tv The sound and video quality is ok. I am sure that with a little work I can get it to work properly. The video does skip a little. This might have something to do with bandwidth. It was a really good practice after taking a week off after our three week tour and was the perfect tune up before our CD Release Show at the Hi Dive in Fremont Seattle.
